Below is a reference guide for formatting pages. A general rule of thumb is to just refer to whatever the Deus Ex fandom wikia does and try to copy it.

This wiki uses MediaWiki for its software, so most of the information about how to use the system is featured on the MediaWiki help articles.

Images

To use images you need to upload them first. On the right panel of this wiki should be a section called Tools. Under it, in the General section, there is an Upload file link.

Please keep in mind that NSFW images are not allowed on this wiki, however they can be modified to be SFW. Please ensure to appropriately blur or censor explicit imagery from any uploads.

Fanart

To avoid complicated filenames, please simplify the destination filename otherwise it will be frustrating to link back to these images easily when editing a page. For example, when uploading a fanart that has a name like IMG_8389373_83728738.jpg, change the destination name to something like:

ArtistName_CharacterName_ImageNo.jpg

For example, for a piece of art created by the artist Heartspowl depicting the character Iris:

Heartspowl_Iris_2.jpg

Gallery

Each character page showcases a fanart gallery. Galleries are divided by original creator and other artists for easier navigation. Other artists should have a caption that indicates the artist name, like so:

by ArtistName

Example of gallery code for original creator:

The first gallery is for art made by the original creator of the OC featured in the article. If the OC is depicted with other OCs, that should be mentioned in the caption, with a link to the other OC's page.

<gallery widths=175 heights=175 mode="nolines">
File:Heartspowl_Agatha_1.jpg|First concept design of Agatha
File:Heartspowl_Iris_Agatha_1.webp|Agatha posing with Iris
</gallery>

Example of gallery for other artists:

The second gallery is for those made by other artists (i.e. fanart of the character created by others). They could be gifts or commissions. The artist should be named in the caption with a link to their creator page (it can remain plain text if they do not have a page).

<gallery widths=175 heights=175 mode="nolines">
File:Heartspowl_circe_1.jpg|by Heartspowl
File:ElRayArt_circe_1.jpg|by ElRayArt
</gallery>

Example of OC showcase gallery on creator page:

This is mostly optional, but you can also create a showcase on a creator page that displays the OCs that person has made. The name of the character should link to the OC article, and the caption should be just a simple and short description of who the character is and their significance or their role is within their respective stories.

The background design can be changed by editing the class erabg at the end of each line to correspond with the franchise era the character is from; -hrmd for prequels, -dx for the original Deus Ex, -iw for Invisible War, -ps for Project: Snowblind, and -pl for other/miscellaneous characters.

<div class="oc-gallery">

Donovan_headshot.png
Tedoro_headshot.png
Tendon_headshot.png
</div>

Page Thumbnail

A page thumbnail is the main image associated with an article, and provides a quick visual indication of what a page is about when typing into the search bar. In most cases the headshot image of a character is used as the page thumbnail. To make the headshot image in the character info box the page thumbnail you need to append |class=pageimage inside the square brackets markup.

For example:

Text

Character Article

The usual sections in a typical page template are as follows:

  • Overview: Main introduction of the character, usually describing their name, their job or general role within the universe.
  • Appearance: Appearance is often the first thing we notice about a person; while the character infobox does provide some details such as hair or eye colour, this section is for elaborating anything else deemed important enough to describe the character physically.
  • Personality: Psychological and mental traits of the character, including habits, interests, demeanour. If some of these details are more like fun facts, they would be better placed in the Trivia section.
  • History: Character's life or significant events prior to main canon events that the character is active during. Can be split into subsections like the Timeline section.
  • Timeline: Character's life or significant events during main canon events that the character is advice during. Usually divided up in subsections such as 2020's or 2050's for a more general date range, a specific date range such as 2027-2029 or a specific year such as 2027.
  • Relationships: If needed, significant character relationships with other characters can be elaborated upon here more than just mentioning briefly in the character table.
  • Trivia: Fun facts or details about the character, such as their favourite food, name meaning, or some unusual quirk.
  • Fanart / Fanwork:
    • Gallery: For fanart, create galleries; one gallery for anything the original creator produced, and the second gallery for fanart/commissions from other artists. The original creator work do not need to be credited with a caption, but fanart from others must always be credited to either their creator page, or just their main handle in the caption. Captions can also be used to describe the image or explain something specific about it, i.e. "this is an older design from xxxx".
    • Sources: As some characters might be only within a fanfiction or in some special cases, derived from something like a Tumblr rp blog, those can be cited in this section too.
  • Playlist: Some artists/creators use music to depict themes and vibes for their work. If it helps or you think it's useful, you can curate a list of music to display here.

Fonts

This wiki has a few fonts installed that were used in the various games of the franchise. More may be added in the future if needed or requested. See the sections below on how to use them.

Suggested uses include character nameplates in the info table or decorating personal user profiles.

Note: Some fonts may not display correctly depending on which browser or device you're using. All fonts displayed are using the .woff2 file format.

Deus Ex

Slider
This is the font Slider. It is a variant of another font called Handel Gothic. It was used in the original Deus Ex game during map loads and some user interface elements.

To access it, use the name 'Slider', with the apostrophes, as demonstrated:

<span style="font-family:'Slider';> Cool text! </span>

Deus Ex Console
This is the font Deus Ex Console. It was used in the original Deus Ex game, mostly in the user interface. If you compare it to Slider, you can see this is actually just an aliased (pixellated) version of that font.

To access it, use the name 'Deus Ex Console', with the apostrophes, as demonstrated:

<span style="font-family:'Deus Ex Console';> Cool text! </span>

The font also has a bold variant called DeusExConsole-Bold which looks like this. It was also used in the game's user interface.

To access it, use the name 'DeusExConsole-Bold', with the apostrophes, as demonstrated:

<span style="font-family:'DeusExConsole-Bold';> Cool text! </span>

Deus Ex: Invisible War

DX2_Font
This is the font DX2_Font. It is a variant of another font called OCR A Extended. It was used in the Invisible War game on some user interface elements, including subtitles.

To access it, use the name 'DX2_Font', with the apostrophes, as demonstrated:

<span style="font-family:'DX2_Font';> Cool text! </span>

Deus Ex: Human Revolution

Denton
This is the font Denton, it is a variant of another font called Maetl. It was used in the Human Revolution logo, and subsequently replaced all future Deus Ex logos in the franchise.

To access it, use the name 'Denton', with the apostrophes, as demonstrated:

<span style="font-family:'Denton';> Cool text! </span>

Eurostile
This is the font Eurostile. It was used in Human Revolution on all interface elements, including subtitles, menus, datapads, etc.

To access it, use the name 'Eurostile', with the apostrophes, as demonstrated:

<span style="font-family:'Eurostile';> Cool text! </span>

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided

Proxima Nova
This is the font Proxima Nova Light. It was used in Mankind Divided on most interface elements, including subtitles, menus, datapads, etc.

To access it, use the name 'Proxima Nova Light', with the apostrophes, as demonstrated:

<span style="font-family:'Proxima Nova Light';> Cool text! </span>

The font also has a bold variant called Proxima Nova Bold which looks like this. It was also used in the game's user interface.

To access it, use the name 'Proxima Nova Bold', with the apostrophes, as demonstrated:

<span style="font-family:'Proxima Nova Bold';> Cool text! </span>

Project: Snowblind

OCR A Extended
This is the font OCR A Extended. It was used in Project: Snowblind on all user interface elements.

To access it, use the name 'OCRAExtended', with the apostrophes, as demonstrated:

<span style="font-family:'OCRAExtended';> Cool text! </span>

Tables

Character Infobox

For character info table, just paste one from another page that already has one. The table is 360px wide, and should always be at the very top of the page, i.e. at the beginning of the text formatting box for the entire page (unless there is a disclaimer info box), otherwise it will not display correctly to the right of the content on the page.

The first row of the character info table must contain the name of the character being discussed, and the second row must contain a headshot image of the character. Recommended size is 256px width/height.

The colors of the table can be modified to show which era the character is from or primarily active during significant events of the canon timeline. Gold is Human Revolution & Mankind Divided (2020's), Blue is Deus Ex (2050's), Purple is Invisible War (2070's). In rare circumstances where a Project: Snowblind OC is encountered, the assigned color is Teal. Some characters may be from alternative universes or spin-offs, in which case the colors should be left unaltered from the original plain template to avoid confusion.

Character Infobox Rows

Below is a list of usual table rows within the character info box and the kind of information that should be displayed.

  • Name: The friendly name of the character. If the full name is too long for the infobox (i.e. if they have many middle names), please write it in the Overview instead.
  • Aliases: Nicknames, screennames, codenames, etc.
  • Born: The birthdate of the character, with the format Month Day, Year (Age at Timeline); for example, July 16th, 1995 (32 in 2027). If the exact date is unknown, the year will suffice.
  • Nationality: Country the character holds a passport in and is a recognized citizen. This is usually empty for artificial intelligence or creatures. The country can be linked to the Deus Ex fandom wikia on the relevant page.
  • Occupation: Employment/jobs, the most recent on the top, including the years held.
  • Height: Preferably both in centimetres and feet, i.e. 160cm / 5'3"
  • Weight: If necessary, usually left out if irrelevant.
  • Blood Type: If necessary, usually left out if irrelevant.
  • Eye Color: Specify whether the eye color is natural or not if the character has augmented eyes that changes the color, i.e. Yellow (augmented), brown (natural)
  • Hair Color: Like eyes, can specify whether the hair is the natural colour or not.
  • Augmentations: To avoid incessantly long character info table, they are grouped into smaller collapsible sections; Nanotechnological (nanites), Physiopharmaceutical (similar to MiB and WiB in DX1), Mechanical (like an arm prosthetic), Transgenical (weird genetically engineered creatures), and Experimental (for augs/enhancements that do not fit into the aforementioned categories). Under each category, you can define further, such as dividing the section into bodily regions such as Cranial, Spinal, etc. or manufacturer such as Sarif Industries, Tai Yong Medical, etc.
  • Relatives: Family members, including adoptive and blood-related. For clones, you can indicate the genetic origins.
  • Relationships: Divided into collapsible categories again; Allies and Enemies. Significant relationships with both canon and non-canon characters, most importantly romantic partners, best friends, partners, colleagues, rivals, etc. If it's just an acquaintance, it's probably redundant to add.
  • Affiliation: Group or organisation the character is a member of.
  • Opposition: Groups or organisation the character is an enemy of.
  • Neutral: Groups or organisations the character is neutral towards - this is somewhat redundant, but can be added if it's important to demonstrate.
  • Friendly: Groups or organisation the character is friendly towards - this is somewhat redundant, but can be added if it's important to demonstrate.
  • Creator: Artist name, linking to their artist page on this website. If you want to link their blog or website, please do so on the artist page, not on the character page.
  • Year: Can change the title to Date of Creation if more valid. Follow the same format as the date of birth (see above). Can be left out of the table entirely if it's impossible to locate the date.
  • Appearances: Main fictional work the character is featured in. Often the name of the AU or fanfiction they are featured in, although not all creators have done this. In the event of no name, just put a hyphen in its place. Please don't remove it, otherwise there will be added labour in putting it back.

Stuff like gender/pronouns are left out of the table, but if important for the character, please elaborate in the article instead. Overview or Appearance sections are probably the best to describe these details.

Character profile images within the infobox should have the background corresponding with the franchise era. To do this you need to know how to use the various IDs and Classes that were created to style the tables.

For example for the Human Revolution OC Keane Grimford, this is the initial table header code:

colspan="2" id="border-hrmd"|<div class="name-plate-hrmd"><div class="character-name-hr">Keane Grimford</div></div>
colspan="2" id="character-prof"|<div class="prof-img-container-hrmd"></div>
  • id="border-hrmd" changes the nameplate border colour to corrospond with the prequel era (gold).
  • class="name-plate-hrmd" changes the nameplate background colour to corrospond with the prequel era (gold) - it wraps around the character name div.
  • class="character-name-hr" changes the nameplate font to correspond with Human Revolution (Eurostile) - it wraps around the character name within a div container.
  • class="prof-img-container-hrmd" adds a background behind the profile image to correspond the prequel era design (gold triangles) - it wraps around the headshot image within a div container.

To change the styles to match different franchise eras, we replace and append the same codes as always:

  • Nameplate Border: To change the nameplate border colour, append the following to border- id:
    • -hrmd - Human Revolution or Mankind Divided - gold
    • -dx - Deus Ex - blue
    • -iw - Invisible War - purple
    • -ps - Project: Snowblind - teal
    • -pl - plain/none for misc/other characters - grey
  • Nameplate Background: To change the nameplate background colour, append the following to name-plate- class:
    • -hrmd - Human Revolution or Mankind Divided - gold
    • -dx - Deus Ex - blue
    • -iw - Invisible War - purple
    • -ps - Project: Snowblind - teal
    • -pl - plain/none for misc/other characters - grey
  • Nameplate Font: To change the nameplate font, append the following to character-name- class:
    • -hr - Human Revolution - Eurostile
    • -md - Mankind Divided - Proxima Nova
    • -dx - Deus Ex - Slider
    • -iw - Invisible War - DX2_Font
    • -ps - Project: Snowblind - OCR A Extended
    • -pl - plain/none for misc/other characters - Arial Black
  • Headshot Background Style: To change the background behind the headshot image, append the following to prof-img-container- class:
    • -hrmd - Human Revolution or Mankind Divided - gold triangles
    • -dx - Deus Ex - blue circuits
    • -iw - Invisible War - purple clouds
    • -ps - Project: Snowblind - teal neurons
    • -pl - plain/none for misc/other characters - grey stripes

Image Tabber

An "image tabber" for the infobox profile/headshot picture was implemented to more easily display vastly different variants/designs of a character.

To add the image tabber we need to inject a different code into the cell on the character-prof id row:

colspan="2" id="character-prof"|<html><div class="prof-nav-container">
  	<div class="prof-nav active" data-version="1" onclick="showImage('1')">Blue Version</div>
  	<div class="prof-nav" data-version="2" onclick="showImage('2')">Red Version</div>
		</div>
  <div id="prof-img-container" class="prof-img-container-hrmd">
    <a href="/index.php/File:Lexi_blue_headshot.png" alt="File:Lexi_blue_headshot.png" title="File:Lexi_blue_headshot.png"><img data-version="1" src="/images/6/6e/Lexi_blue_headshot.png" width="268" height="268" alt="Image 1" class="active"></a>
    <a href="/index.php/File:Red-lexi_headshot.png" alt="File:Red-lexi_headshot.png" title="File:Red-lexi_headshot.png"><img data-version="2" src="/images/e/e3/Red-lexi_headshot.png" width="268" height="268" alt="Image 2"></a>
  </div></html>

Here, two buttons are placed above the profile image, and the text of the buttons can be changed retroactively.

To keep the image clickable so it opens up the File: page on the wiki, we need the File name, like this: File:Lexi_blue_headshot.png, and then we need to hard-link the image within the <a href=" "> tag like this: /index.php/File:Lexi_blue_headshot.png.

To get the full link of the image you need to right click the image on the File: page and copy image link, then it can be shortened by starting at the /images/ directory, like this: /images/e/e3/Red-lexi_headshot.png. This needs to be done on an image-by-image basis as the directory may differ between the files.

Below are working examples; on the left demonstrates the different franchise era styling, on the right demonstrates what it looks like when injected into a character infobox table.

Variant Switcher

Sometimes the image tabber is not enough, as it's mostly intended to be used for minor aesthetic variations, i.e. a version of a character during the 2030's and a version of them during the 2070's.

In the rare case where the variations are so extreme from one another (i.e. they have completely different designs, histories, futures, etc.) you will need to use the variant switcher. This is usually when duplicates characters need merging into a single article, but the information for the two characters differ drastically.

To implement this into a character article, the code is a simple div container that you place around the text for each variant:

<div class="variant" data-variant="Original">Text and stuff for the original version of the character</div>
<div class="variant" data-variant="Revised">Text and stuff for the revised version of the character</div>

This will add a button at the top of the page called Original and Revised, which allows you to switch between the text for each of them. You also replace the words Original and Revised to change the button text to something more relevant.

View the working example here.

Quotations

There is an option of displaying relevant speech as stylised quotes, instead of using boring blockquotes. The colour of the quotation marks can be changed depending on the franchise era, to better match with other elements of the page.

For example for the prequel era:

Deep and cool quote showcasing how I think or feel about something that is interesting to note.—Cool Character
class="quotebox-quote" style="color:#b18840;"|“
class="quotebox-text"|Deep and cool quote showcasing how I think or feel about something that is interesting to note.<span class="quotebox-ref">—Cool Character</span>
class="quotebox-quote" style="color:#b18840;"|”

Page Disclaimers & Warnings

All disclaimers and warnings must be inserted at the top of a character or creator page, before any other text. If there is more than one warning on the page, a gap of 7px should be added between them. This can be done by modifying the second table's style properties, and adding the following:

margin-top:7px;

A global class in the CSS wasn't created for this purpose because normally a margin would not be needed with general use of the alert boxes, as very rarely does any character need more than one.

The expandable/collapsible variants below are expanded by default. To make them collapsed by default, replace mw-collapsible in the table class with mw-collapsible mw-collapsed.

Character Duplicate Alert

Don't forget to link back to the other character where it says "another original character".

Character is a Newer Iteration:

POTENTIAL DUPLICATE

Sources indicate that this character may be newer iteration of another original character by the same creator.

As the names and designs are different, it is difficult to distinguish whether or not the creator intended to redesign or replace the character, or if the similarities are merely coincidental.

If we are able to confirm that this is a duplicate character, the information on the other page will be merged with this page and a redirect will be created.

Character Trigger Warning

This can be customised to list only relevant triggers as opposed to the general description provided already.

TRIGGER WARNING

This character profile may feature content that some individuals could find sensitive, upsetting, or offensive.

This may include (but is not limited to) references to extreme violence, abuse or assault, mental health disorders, discrimination, or other distressing topics.

Please proceed with caution and prioritize your well-being.

Approval Stars

(Note: This idea has not been implemented yet, but you can read the concept below.)

With the Approval star system, you can show users which character profiles have received approval from their respective creators and/or owners. That also extends to permission to re-host their relevant creative works in the archive for people to browse.

Please note, that in the event of explicit disapproval from the creator, the content will be removed in accordance to our Takedown Policy.

Icon Code Description Meaning

Full Star Approved: Creator has provided explicit permission to display their content, and they have verified the information displayed

Half-Star Cannot Approve: Creator cannot be contacted in any way. We may be the only people with knowledge of their work

Empty Star Not Approved: Either no attempts have been made to gain approval, or we are waiting on the creator for approval

Usage

In order the use the code, the header row of the character info box needs to be replaced with a new div container calling back to various new classes inserted into the site CSS. For example, for the character Jacynthia Levert (a prequel era OC);

colspan="2" style="padding:0px;border-color:#b18840;"|<div class="name-plate-hrmd">
<div id="align-r" class="approval-star"></div>
<div class="character-name-hr">Jacynthia Levert</div>
</div>

This code is live on her page if you want to see it in action, or copy it from there. To understand what the code is actually doing or how to modify it:

Inside the first div container, the name-plate-hrmd class changes the background colour for the header row to match the Human Revolution and Mankind Divided gold color, so it's no longer needed to add a background-color style. The other franchise eras use name-plate-dx (Deus Ex), name-plate-iw (Invisible War), and name-plate-pl (Plain/None) respectively.

The second div container uses the id align-r to float the Approval Star to the right of the name without making a new line. The class approval-star handles the style and positioning of the star icon.

Next, the image is added, using MediaWiki syntax. The hover caption text needs to be changed depending on the star, i.e.

State Caption Text
Approved Approved: This character's profile is approved by the creator.
Cannot Approve Cannot Approve: This character belongs to a creator who cannot be contacted.
Not Approved Not Approved: This character's profile has not been approved by the creator yet.

Lastly, the character name goes inside a new div container which controls the font use and it's size via the class character-name-hr, which again can be altered similarly to the name-plate options as described above, by swapping the last part out with -md, -dx, -iw, or -pl.
