Overview
Josiah is an original character not strictly tied to Deus Ex, he shows up in different writen works involving a variety of IPs.
Usually a demonic entity with magical powers, the pertinent version this article will tackle is his Deus Ex self, the following being a short blurb of his role as JC's otherwordly sidekick in MYTHOS (and one of the few pieces of it available):
JC Denton — the young man the sort that might have an air of slow going dullness and ditziness , but as his training and educational marks show, he is vastly intelligent and strategic — is a brand new UNATCO agent thrown onto the job on his first night with the group.
That would be nerve-wracking enough, but while hunting for the Ambrosia cure for the Grey Death in New York, JC’S descent into the subway below the city to get to his mission destination brings him in contact with horrible monsters the likes of which no human mind could fully comprehend beyond the inky black of their bodies covered in too many eyes and teeth.
The beings have JC pinned in when the boy leaps to his rescue from seeming thin air and puts an end to the monsters with some odd weapons. This is JC’s first encounter with demons and the colourful creature that calls himself Josiah — asking JC to call him Cheshire to others — and claims to be JC’s protector against the monster he dubs Hadrian that wish to consume him for the use of dominating this world.
JC is skeptical at first, but when more of the monsters pop up, even Mr. Simons claiming to have encountered the beings, and the frightening Walker, real name Arion, becomes involved, JC has no choice but admit his world has been turned upside down. Sometimes literally when it comes to Josiah. With his own problems playing out, JC soon finds that perhaps Majestic 12 is not so in control of things as it seems… And how much evil this could mean for JC’s world.
What seemed Mythical is now very real, and JC and his new, inhuman companions must race to stop the plans of the Majestic 12 and this Hadrian both before humanity as JC knows it becomes a myth itself.
Appareance
He's described as "colorful", skinny and with curly hair, visual traits the author has a history of favoring for her character's fashion sense and designs.
He's also called "boy", so it's assumed he has a youthful appearance, although JC himself is also called "boy" in the next excerpt.
Personality
The following is another piece of text from the story involving Walton Simons. Here, a little of Josiah's juvenile personality is displayed:
“Are you lost, boy?” Simons spotted JC wandering once again through the halls of UNATCO yet again. He was ready to be angry with him, but JC turned quickly to look at Walton, and when he did, Walton became painfully aware of the odd expression on the boy’s face. Simons’ lips pursed and he closed the distance between him and the boy who looked up at Walton.
“Well?” Simons asked when JC did not respond.
“I think so, Sir,” JC finally replied, the tone even more distant that usual. Even with the sunglasses, wide blue eyes met Simons’ steely grey ones.
Simons did not want the confusion to spread to his own heart, but there was just such a bizarre feeling to the air now that JC spoke. Denton was not speaking of the building itself; that was obvious. What captured his mind was a happening, a thing that was still there. Simons was not the paranoid type, but if he was, he would probably be glancing over his shoulder.
“Should I lead you out by your ear then?” Simons threatened despite the feeling. It was probably nothing, knowing JC. He was an eccentric; a ditz with no real feel for his surroundings outside that thick head of his.
“Oh no, I do not think that will help at all, Director.” JC was already getting ready to push past him with some polite mutterings of how he must be off on business. Simons whipped out a hand to stop him, however; his grip tightening on the somewhat pudgey arm of the new agent.
“Excuse me? You better explain what is going on , Denton. Now is the appointed time, at that.”
Yet the boy would not. Not because he was being defiant; there was none of that in JC’s eyes – really, he was not the rebellious sort his irritating brother Paul was – only an uncertain how he was suppose to tell Waltons anything when JC himself did not know what was going on. It came with that short boy and his dark brother, JC knew, but even that did not seem to put a name to the feeling of what had just turned his world upside down.
“I will find out for myself, then,” Simons’ tone evened out. No point putting the boy on alert just yet; there was time for that yet. He would, however, make sure that whatever this was was either put under his contrl or crushed before it could be a potential problem.
“How?” JC asked, quite hoping Simons had the answer that was escaping JC.
Walton did not portray it on his face, but he honestly did not know. Simons just waved the boy away, the closest he was going to get to commiserating with him .
“I’ll let you know soon enough, Denton. Just get back to work.”
JC mumbled a reply even as he could only watch Walton walk away with his stony hands in his pockets. JC was sure Simons felt none of the shift in the atmosphere that was still going on, even though it was right at their side the whole time…. literally.
“Kind of a stick in the mud, ain’t he~?” Josiah’s voice was singsong as he hung down from the ceiling. At least, he thought the younger boy with the curly hair was hanging from something, it kind of looked more like he was floating really.
“I do not think he knows what…. your thing is, either.” JC admitted. He thought of the FEMA Director as all-knowing and all-powerful in ways, but he was beginning to lose that notion as their world became strange and different. “So you know.”
“Stick in the mud~.” Josiah crowed. The skinny boy disappeared from sight – his little ditty about Simons being a stick in the mud still flying around JC despite his lack of tangibility somehow – for a moment then blinked into sight again ahead of JC. “Anyway, you don’t have to stay lost, you know; I told you I would help out~. We’re hermanos now, you and I, got it~?”
That JC understood and nodded to, but he hesitated when Josiah turned around to offer him a hand. He stared at it, not liking that he did not know what is to come. “Lost” was the word Simons had used, and JC definitely felt that. Lost oh so very, very lost.
“I ain’t gonna throw you under the bus, JC. I’ll even pinky swear if it makes you feel better.”
JC shook his head, bemused by Josiah’s energetic nature as he had been since they had met a few nights ago. “No, that’s okay. Just…. explain it. Everything going on, I mean.”
Josiah’s grin widened, showing the fangs that were not quite the same length or size. “Down the rabbit hole we go, then~.”
…Perhaps JC had made a grave error.
Timeline
2052
The premise and a little excerpt of the story itself it's all that could be recovered. It's unknown how exactly it ends, though it's known the sequel called CRYOS loosely follows Invisible War canon having JC Denton "missing" and Josiah playing an antagonistic role.
2072
The following is a blurb of CRYOS:
A massive explosion rocks the city and disrupts the power of a long forgotten facility. Here, the very last remnant of the Watcher Project is pulled unceremoniously from his cryogenic sleep and into a totally new world he has never seen before. Vili Macx is a clone of Reese Macx, memories and all, but is very aware of that and comfortable with it. He is also convinced that this could be no coincidence, and after a harrowing escape from his practical tomb, Vili escapes into the world that has been thrown into chaos.
It has more than just rebuilt, advancing far beyond anything the old guy Sarif could imagine, showing in Vili himself as he becomes accustomed to his biomods and the technology of the world around him. In his adventures, he quite literally runs into the D twins (based on ha-y‘s art/headcanon), Alex and Alexis (the former an easygoing young man who rides along with the tide while the latter is quite a tough maiden who won’t take any sort of nonsense from anyone yet has a gentler side when it comes to her younger twin) who bear a keen resemblance to a grump Old Man the original owner of Vili’s past memories knew and thought quite highly of as father figure.
Taking it as a sign that his mission of heroism involved these twins that were not certain if they truly enjoyed his presence, Vili attaches himself to the twins, for better or for worse, as they seek out for the truth behind the Tarsus Academy explosion and the whereabouts of a one JC Denton. They are not alone in their endeavours; Vili hunts down the grandson of the final part of Watcher hunting trio, a one Yusef Gawaine who has taken up the life of a pacifistic, well-respected vigilante during the night time, and drags him into things because he is as intelligent as his grandfather and “half as creepy”, as Vili puts it. While Yusef is a bit uncertain he eventually gives into joining the crusade that takes them all over the world. He would have really preferred to stay a hometown hero…
Yusef is not the only one that joins the team. Arion returns to the world on the tail of his twin brother who reappeared after twenty years of being missing, at least partially more serious than he had been, and proclaimed that he had to stop the D twins and their new companions from finding his former friend. As such, the D twins and their ever-growing team come to odds with Josiah and his ally, the barely organic Ilmarinen, a soldier awoken from cryo-restasis by the Tarsus explosion and recovered by Josiah that had been turned into a living weapon of revenge long ago and bow fights for what he is told, and in his heart feels, is the right thing.
With this mystery of Josiah’s interference piled on top of the back and forth with Templars and WHO alike, the D twin, Vili, Yusef and Arion have quite an adventure ahead. Just what is the truth behind the Templars and WHO? Are either pure of intentions? And what is it Josiah and his disciple warn of? Nothing is certain except something more than explosively energetic clones and saint-like super soldiers is about to awake… And it shall be seen whether that awakening is for good or for ill.
