Overview

Rayne is described by the author as a "cyberpunk character" created a year (or several) prior to Deus Ex: Human Revolution's release.

After the author played the game, she decided to ship Rayne with Adam because:

If she ever fell in love, it would be with Adam Jensen, haha...

Appearance

She's a redhead that likes wearing revealing outfits, according to the author because cyberpunk clothes are generally scandalous and awesome to design. So no, she's not a streetwalker, it's just the time she lives in.

Sometimes, for missions, she's depicted with mechanical devices on her skin that look like external augs, but according to the author that's not the case:

For those wondering, the tech on her face and arm is not part of her. Rayne's augments are under her skin (plus her right eye).
What she's wearing is a type of cybertape (although not easy to remove like tape...) that allows her to make shallow connections between her nervous system and equipment via unique sensors.
She has enhancers in her brain, though she cannot make a physical connection with them, that boost that signal. Her arm comm also grants connectivity. The cybertape is what you would wear when you don't have a plugsuit available.

Personality

Helpful, daring and competent at what she specializes in, is said to always bear a "cold expression" and be distant with those around her, hardly allowing others to truly understand her more intimately.

Showing visible facial emotion is "nothing like her" according to the author, which makes her more personal moments with Adam all the more unique, as he's the only one who she opens up to.

History

If there was any lore to Rayne previous to her becoming a Deus Ex original character, it's lost. And any of her once she became one is scarce, if any.

There are only two brief stories narrating moments between her and Adam as a couple, relaxing after "missions".

Silent Night
Jensen and Rayne have gotten back from a mission. He showered and plopped on the couch to do whatever sans shirt. Rayne showered, threw on a tank top and shorts, then is piddling around their safehouse, preparing for the next step in their plan. He sees her glancing over at his chest and thinks his exposed augmentations are making her uncomfortable. So he apologizes and reaches for a shirt. She says, "You think it bothers me, but it doesn't. We're all a little bit machine, you know... Mine are just under the skin."
She offers to tweak one of his augments (it got damaged during a mission), saying she's no expert but it'll do for the time being. He agrees and she kneels down in front of him. Things get... intimate... from there.
This is the first time Rayne is approaching him intimately, finally getting comfortable with the idea of letting someone in that barrier she's built up. Before, he initiated and she... went along. Now it's her turn. And... I guess I imagined him holding her head, stroking her neck, getting into her coming on to him. But... maybe the feeling is misconstrued after all?

This Isn't A Mistake
I imagine that the first time anything was initiated, Jensen would be the one convincing Rayne it's all right since they are working together on a mission or something. Not an "I love you" encounter, more like a "let's have sex, I like you" encounter. Afterward, when she got up to get dressed, he would say, "This wasn't a mistake, Rayne. I care about you."

Trivia

Besides being primarily a "cyberpunk character" and then becoming a Deus Ex one, she also has a Tron version, although that one lacks lore details altogether.
