Stolen Deus Ex: Neon Shadows (Part 1)

Overview

Shaali is a sensible and empathetic mechanically and nano-augmented woman who focuses her abilities on physicaly healing others.

This doesn't mean she has no offensive capabilities, quite to the contrary, in fact, she's perfectly competent at defending herself. It's just that due to her personality, she instead favors using her proficiencies for nursing.

She has a romantic relationship with Adam Jensen and is friends with Faridah Malik and Francis Pritchard, as well as Kain Jensen, although this friendship carries tensions due to Kain's more selfish and careless personality clashing with Shaali's will for forgiveness and sacrifice.

This article will be based on the fanfic Deus Ex: Neon Shadows Part 1 since Stolen, Shaali's origin story, remains lost media.

Appearance

She's an interesting sight in the eyes of men, highlighted by the fact Bastion thinks it's a shame to harm such a beauty and his men disobeying a direct order by wanting to rape her before dismantling her off her augs.

Personality

She's best described as highly susceptible of the suffering of others, even total strangers, highlighted when Bastion extorts her into surrendering by showing a heavily injured Andreas Crescereo-Jensen and further hurt him right in front of her.

When she surrenders, she does so not without a plan (stalling Bastion and his men for the Jensens, letting them know through body lenguage), showcasing she's quite intelligent and strategic even in stressful, dire situations.

Her willingness for forgivness is shown when Bastion, after realizing his team and plan had failed, tries shooting her from behind as a last act of pettiness, which Shaali averts by quickly disarming him and piercing his chest with her nano-blade. She does so not to kill, but to keep him paralized while her nanites activate it's healing properties to keep him alive.

In that state, her nanites then send memories of all augmented victims of the Aug Incident into his brain, all to make him go through their suffering:

“Open your eyes, stop focusing on the one side. They were in there fighting it all along, like a puppet on a string with no control. Feel it. Experience it. Look at the child killing his Mum and screaming that it wasn’t real but couldn’t stop it. Feel the wife attack her husband, telling him she loved him even while the voices convinced her he was a monster that had to die.”

“Stop it!” Bastion cried out, the hatred replaced with the same kind of emotions he was seeing reflected it those he’d come to despise so much.

“You refuse to acknowledge those with augmentations are just like you, we feel, we hurt… so many of them killed people they loved and, instead of being helped to cope, they have been ostracized, beaten and punished for it. As you slip into unconsciousness think about this: I was one of the few not affected, there that day using my technology to heal. I can help ease the suffering in this world while all you want to do is add to it.”

Afterwards, she retracts her blade and leaves him unconscious; because killing him would make her no better than those like him, and because she hopes once he wakes up he stops his twisted crusade.

Looking down at him, Shaali could only hope Bastion would wake up with a better understanding and maybe even stop what he was doing. Yes, she acknowledged the only way to really ensure that was to end him but she wasn’t about to give the Naturals more fuel to throw on a fire already well-lit and burning out of control.

It might look like she's a pacifist, but that's inaccurate, as she's willing to kill when obvious injustice is taking place and/or the situation warrants it: she doesn't think twice and lands a killshot straight into Tammy's forehead to stop her from further hurting Adam.

History

It's unknown what her origin story is, but after becoming acquainted with Adam, Francis and Faridah, they spend time together hitting clubs and going out.

She's extremely sympathetic of all augmented victims of the Aug Incident, spending her time healing and aiding as much of them as she could. It's also worth noting she wasn't affected by it, and her prosthetic arm was acquired after "sacrificing" herself for Adam. More specific details of this major happening are unknown.

Timeline

2027

She aids as best as she can all augmented victims of the Aug Incident. She also loses a complete arm by 'sacrificing' for Adam.

2028

Shaali and her friends are attacked by an Anti-Aug terrorist group looking to kill, harvest and probably destroy prosthetic parts a little after exiting a club at night. The group, lead by Bastion, kidnaps Adam Jensen and take him to a set of abandoned warehouses.

After tracking his position aided remotely by Francis, Shaali and Kain head to the place to rescue Adam. Once they realize he's being tortured while stripped off one of his prosthetic arms, Shaali and Kain charge into attacking the big group, killing almost everybody in the process.

It isn't until Bastion intervenes by showing Shaali an injured Andreas that the violence ceases for a while, the healer and Kain surrendering momentarily until Shaali activates a form of Pulsed Energy Projection System that knocks all foes down.

Bastion, as a last effort before truly accepting defeat, tries killing Shaali by shooting her from behind, an action that's easily thwarted by her that's subsequently followed by knocking Bastion out.

She then proceeds to heal everybody involved except Kain, who prefers to be healed back in HQ. Andreas, who was previously in such a bad shape he couldn't speak, then tells the team he needs to find his pet that he lost right before he was abducted himself.

Trivia

• Deus Ex: Neon Shadows (Part 1) is a direct sequel of Stolen.
• In it's canon, Kain isn't romantically involved with Adam and is limited to being his overprotective twin brother. In the same vein, Andreas isn't Adam and Francis' son, but an unrelated augmented civilian.
• Shaali's nanites are visible in the form of black liquid.
• Shaali's nanite abilities seem limitless and don't waste any kind of bio-energy, and she can perform feats like:
  • Clearing people off a drunk stupor;
  • Sending one person's memories into another;
  • Armoring herself with layers of it;
  • Track people if nanites are left outside and/or inside their bodies by highlighting specific augs;
  • Healing wounds;
  • Creating a unique form of Pulsed Energy Projection System, which Shaali can choose to make lethal or non-lethal.
