Overview

Layla "Double Dutch" Jacobs is an augmented human working for Task Force 29 as an undercover agent within ARC, as well as a high-functioning alcoholic. Previously working for MI6 and the Special Air Service, her personal morals can be described as grey at best where the ends justify the means.

Personality

Layla excels as undercover work, drinking whiskey, and saying exactly what you want to here. Her most deadly traits are her tenacity and ability to thrive under pressure in extreme circumstances. While in the field, she's often quite the smartass when she can get away with it. Because she can become so focused on the mission, she's often seen as aloof and standoffish when off the job. Despite this, once you start talking to her she becomes quite friendly and is clearly a social chameleon.

Physical Description

Her build is athletic and leaner than one would expect. She has cosmetically repaired extensive facial and torso burn/explosion scars covering 60% of the front of her body. All were repaired except a long gash over her eye - she has a prosthetic she wears over it when doing undercover work.

Her typical style when off the job is primarily modern cuts, consisting of basic and muted colors with a utilitarian function and look. Often she'll adjust this style depending on where she's going and if she feels a need to blend in.

While she is heavily augmented, she doesn't like covering her arms unless needed. She finds that a lot of shirt sleeves tend to get pinched between the synthetic shoulder muscles.

History

2011—2022

At age 18, Layla enlisted with the Royal Air Force. She was selected for Intelligence work. Her skills and drive eventually lead her to applying to MI6 at the age of 24. She was attached to an SAS Recon Detachment as an MI6 consultant to the team. It was during this time that she received extensive MI6 training in SERE and Human intelligence.

In 2020, the ban on female SAS operative is lifted and Layla joins SAS proper as field specialist once she graduates SAS School.

In 2022, she is planted as an agent in South Africa to monitor arms trafficking as part of a joint MI6-INTERPOL taskforce. During this time she works indirectly with Ben Saxton to coordinate strikes against crime lords and illicit cargo shipments, mostly bound to Australia.

2023—2025

Layla loses her arms and eyes in an IDE incident while exfiltrating from an arms deal gone wrong. She is pulled out of the SAS due to her injuries and given primitive augmentations as well as a generous severance package. Her new desk job in Aquisitions proves to be challenging, though she continues to work on her fine motor skills by crocheting fine lace.

2022—2023

Timeline

2026—2027

After being let go from her desk job, Layla seeks out employment and is snapped up by Sarif Industries. She serves as a liaison between Sarif and the EU for government augmentation contracts due to her acquisitions experience. She's given a whole new suite of augmentations to perform her job, which includes the ability to temporarily plug into experimental augs as a way to both test and showcase the augs to potential buyers. Adam Jensen meets her after his initial hire as Head of Security for Sarif Industries, as Sarif brings him to each Sarif hub to give feedback on physical security.

Layla is at the Sarif Industries Europe Augmentation Proving Grounds during the Aug Incident, discussing a legitimate arms agreements with EU representatives. She was mostly unaffected by the signal due to her military-grade augmentation prototypes having backup chips and advanced software suites in case of remote biochip hijack. She ends up killing most of these representatives in self-defense.

In 2027, warrants for her arrest drawn up but then forfeited after camera footage proves self-defense. Layla is undercover from INTERPOL for a year for the duration of the warrant.

2028—Present

Layla, now jobless and formerly on the run, manages to leverage her contacts within the intelligence community to give her a 'second chance' through Task Force 29. She gains a role as an undercover agent, working briefly with Singh for TF29 basic agent training until she's planted within the ARC. Little known to her, the Illuminati see her as a threat and purposefully have Director Miller put her on this mission to both keep tabs inside of the organization and to conveniently dispose of her when necessary. Her goal is to evaluate if ARC is a terrorist organization, and who the key players are. She is so successful with her role that she becomes the second-in-command of Talos Rucker.

Adam meets Layla again at the Utelek Complex. While Adam is exploring the complex, Layla realizes that the Marchenko and the Golden Masked Mercenaries are not only connected, but are subverting ARC and are attempting to kill Rucker. Layla sends an emergency extraction notification to TF29, but the Illuminati have blocked her signal so the truth will die with her. Marchenko is notified that Layla has realized he isn't who he says he is, blowing her cover hours before the arrival of Adam. Layla and Adam don't recognize each other at first, with Layla being in disguise and Adam having become augmented since the last time she saw him.

Not realizing her signal for extraction was blocked, she mistakes him for a fellow agent coming to save her blown cover. Adam witnesses her killing several guards before approaching her and hoping she can help him bring Talos in with little bloodshed. Unfortunately, despite Layla's pleas Talos still drinks the laced whiskey and dies.
