Overview
Alice Dark is a journalist and amateur novelist originating from a wealthy family. Following an abusive relationship with a mercenary named Leon, she is kidnapped and held aboard a Belltower ship. She is eventually rescued by Sarif Industries security chief Adam Jensen, toward whom she develops intense romantic feelings.
Appearance
Alice has fiery red hair, which she sometimes wears loose and without elaborate styling.
She has a particular fondness for silver and gold. For a corporate New Year party, she wears a long silver-and-gold dress with a simple gold necklace.
Personality
Although independently employed, Alice remains socially inexperienced and struggles with trauma, anxiety, and fear of abandonment.
Alice is notably shy, particularly around strangers and in unfamiliar social situations. At crowded events, she tends to remain at the edges of the room rather than approach other guests.
Her experiences with Leon have left her fearful, distrustful, and psychologically scarred. She remains afraid that he may return and abduct her again. These experiences also affect her later relationships, causing her to react defensively when she feels threatened or uncertain.
Alice experiences love in an unusually intense and idealised manner. She regards Adam as someone capable of completing her life, but is simultaneously frightened of losing him or becoming overly dependent upon him. Her journal suggests that she has difficulty separating romantic attachment from her sense of identity.
Under stress, Alice can act impulsively. During her reunion with Adam in Prague, she misinterprets his comments, slaps him, and runs away. She almost immediately regrets the incident and becomes distressed by her own behaviour.
Despite her family wealth, Alice values personal independence. She chooses to work as a journalist and later accepts temporary bar work to earn additional money.
History
Alice's father died before she was born. She was raised by her mother, whom Alice describes as similarly shy. Her mother inherited Alice's father's fortune and later became associated with a luxury recreational complex.
Alice consequently grew up within an upper-class environment, although she chose to pursue journalism rather than rely entirely upon her family's wealth. She also became an amateur novelist and accumulated a large collection of video games, consoles, and rare gaming items.
She became close friends with Alexia, who later served as both her employer and best friend.
At some point, Alice entered a relationship with Leon. The relationship was unsuccessful and abusive, eventually culminating in Leon and his mercenary associates abducting her.
Timeline
2027
Leon and his mercenary group kidnap Alice without warning. According to the later rewrite, she is held aboard a Belltower ship for several months.
Adam Jensen eventually rescues her. Alice subsequently accompanies or witnesses Adam confronting Leon's mercenaries, during which considerable violence occurs. The experience makes her aware of Adam's capacity for violence, although she also comes to regard him as her protector.
During the night following her rescue, Alice and Adam spend time together beneath the stars, becoming sexually intimate. Alice later identifies this as the point at which she became afraid of losing him.
By December, Alice has developed strong romantic feelings for Adam. Her journal describes them holding hands, lying together, and sharing their first kiss. She considers the experience confirmation that Adam reciprocates her feelings.
In the original version of Confessions 2, Alice receives an anonymous invitation to a private corporate New Year party on 31 December. Alexia encourages her to attend and allows her to leave work early to prepare.
Alice purchases a silver-and-gold dress and attends the party, where she discovers that Adam arranged the invitation. They spend the evening discussing their work and personal histories.
At midnight, Alice unexpectedly kisses Adam. An image of the two embracing is subsequently broadcast by international media as part of worldwide New Year coverage.
2028
The original version of Confessions 2 begins 2028 with Alice and Adam kissing at the New Year celebration.
A later rewrite presents a different or revised account. In this version, Alice is living in a small apartment in Prague and occasionally works at Bar Chaos, which is owned by her new friend Alex.
While helping during a crowded evening at the bar, Alice unexpectedly encounters Adam for the first time since their experiences in 2027. Adam explains that he previously behaved coldly because of an unsuccessful former relationship and says that he now wants to begin a relationship with Alice.
Alice becomes confused and suspects that Adam may already have a partner. Acting out of fear and anger, she slaps him in front of the bar's patrons. She immediately apologises, begins crying, and runs from the building.
While attempting to return home, Alice injures her left leg in a city park. Adam follows her using his cloaking augmentation and reveals himself after she admits that she can no longer run. He examines the injury and determines that her leg is sprained rather than broken.
Trivia
- In the fanfiction, some of the characters may be cross-overs with other franchises. Though, this fact is not explicitly confirmed, the author writes other cross-over fanfictions that reference Deus Ex.
- The original idea for Confessions 2 featured a story where two dimensions merge, and dangerous people from another place enter to continue their evil work in a new place.
