Overview
Matthias is an hacker in the New Sons of Freedom and later Northwest Secessionist Forces group.
History
Matthias MCclean is one of the main hackers working for the New Sons of Freedom in 2029.
As a young teen in college, Matthias was the classic young good-looking man that could have the school at its feet. Born in a wealthy family with ties in political parties, he would often participate in various events organized by his mother with major political figures in order to push his father's image onto the Republican Party.
In reality, Matthias had always been a very down-to-earth guy; he wasn't interested in the slightest about that kind of world nor too much in the attention he would receive for his wealth and looks; in secret, away from his parent's judgemental eyes, he only wanted to cultivate his passion for everything involving a computer. Yet he had learned - by his bigger brother's advice - to "wear a mask" and accommodate the situation to his own advantage.
2017
He had refused to join one of the frat parties he was invited in - despite the growing doubts that his best friend would've fell into the pit and consumed some dangerous drug. And sadly, his fear became reality. The death of Gabriel was the first step of an immense domino that pushed Matthias to speak up against the drugs addiction that was spreading amongst his generation, up until he managed to hack the Police Department of Boston just to dig up files of corrupted agents that were spreading these substances on purpose, under the orders of big names in multiple political parties, all with the simple intent to test those drugs' effects and create some buzz that would unfocus the general public's eyes from what ugly schemes they were really doing.
Matthias decided he couldn't shut up. He caused a riot in his college, and the only result was that his parents kicked him out the house. He managed to live off for a few years with the economic help of his brother, until the Aug Incident, and opted for the hacker name 4RCHANG3L online, gaining quite some notoriety amongst anonymous colleagues, and changes his last name from "McLean" to "McClean" as an in-joke against his parents.
Aug Incident
Freshly augged with a simple infolink to contact his brother and acquaintances without his parents' control, Matthias immediately felt the effect the chip and managed to lock himself in a room to avoid major damage. His brother, though, wasn't so lucky, and perished by the hands of a friend.
2027
Everything he had digged up from the drug scandal was safely crypted in his belonging. Aware that this could make some heads fall (including his father's), Matthias decided to contact the Rippers on the dark net and ultimately reached Juan Lebedev. The latter welcomed him in the New Sons of Freedom with open arms, keeping the crypted files as digital weapon to get rid of some political figures that could get across their goals.
2028
Matthias is sent by Juan Ivanovich Lebedev in Mlada Boleslav to check on the situation against augmented people and, possibly, recruit anyone on site that could be useful in their cause, americans or not. That's where he meets Agatha Romero and falls deeply in love with her.
2029
As Iris reaches the outskirt, it's Matthias the one whose informs Lebedev that she is appaently nanoaugmented. Once the attack happnen and Iris overcharges with her EMP Blast augmentation, Matthias injects her a dose of adrenaline and organizes a VTOL to send her in the US and stat her training to officially join the New Sons of Freedom.
Relationship with Agatha
Matthias shows signs of PTSD after Agatha's passing. Unbenknowst to everyone, he manages to develop an AI based on her that he keeps hidden in his apartment and with whom he talks regularly. Despite it not being as developed as Eliza Cassan, the AI starts showing first sings of becoming self-aware in the long run. Matthias ultimately turns it off once Iris reunites with Adam Jensen, upon the Ai's request, as it considers now her own journey finished and therefore he must find the strenght to do the same.
